BIG IDEA: The Church must not be afraid to confront sin.
“Don’t you know that a little yeast
works through the whole batch of dough?”
1 Corinthians 5:6b (NIV)
- __________ the __________. (v 1-2)
- __________ the __________. (v 3-5)
- __________ the __________. (v 6-13)
BIG IDEA: The Church must not be afraid to confront sin.
Read: Re-read 1 Corinthians 5:1-13 & read Matthew 18:15-20.
Think: Think of the implications of confronting sin in the Church, and then ask yourself the following questions: How does Paul’s view of this situation differ from that of the Corinthians (v 2, 6)? How would you paraphrase what Paul tells them to do (v 3-5)? If you were a member of the church at Corinth, how would you explain to your pagan neighbor why this man had been expelled (v 5)? From the yeast imagery (v 6-8), what is Paul’s concern if this situation is allowed to go on without discipline? How is this consistent with the “new bread” they have become (v 7-8)? Why is there a difference between the way Christians relate to those outside the faith and the way they relate to believers (v 9-11)? How do you reconcile Paul’s teaching here with that in 4:3-5? What is the point of each?
Do: In matters of discipline do you tend to be too judgmental, too permissive, inconsistent or helpful? Explain. Do you need to confront sin in your own life?
