BIG IDEA: Got wisdom?
Read: Re-read 1 Corinthians 2:6-16)
Think: Think about the nature and source of wisdom, and then ask yourself the following questions: In what area are you an expert or specialist? How did you achieve that status? From the references to wisdom in this passage how would you describe the difference between human wisdom and God’s? What point is Paul making by his quote from the OT in v 9 (see also v7)? Philosophers were respected as people who could search out deep truths; in contrast, how does Paul say the truth of the Gospel is discerned (v 10-13)? Why is this so important for unity within the Corinthian church? How does the condition for receiving spiritual wisdom differ from those necessary to gain the world’s wisdom (v 9, 14-16)? Again, why is this critical for unity within the Corinthian church?
Do: The Corinthians were measuring “truth and success” by how powerful, influential and articulate someone was. How is that attitude and idea conveyed today? How does it square with the Gospel? Got wisdom?
